Software Update -- FlyCast v1.22 available

Postby FlyCastRosco on Fri Nov 07, 2008 3:04 pm

** Updated **
Everyone has been having a lot better results with this build.
I have moved it over to the good build directory. It is now
the default download and is available at this location as well:

** Updated **

Hello everyone.

We have made some major changes to address some of the
issues you have been having, especially related to connections.

We are going to make this build available now, but we want to
be clear that we have changed a lot. This version uses a different
approach to try to connect to our server and will use a growing
database of carrier specific connection strings to connect.

If it still won't connect, keep these two things in mind. One, we
are now logging your carrier server side and will try to update it
ourselves. Two, you may be presented with a page that may ask
you to send us your APN information. By having you enter these
settings and then using them to connect, we know that they are
good and will use them for other users on the same carrier. If you don't
know your APN settings, you can try to find them at the following site:
http://www.pinstack.com/carrier_settings_apn_gateway.html

What's new in this version:
    Significant reduction in memory usage.
Modified streaming code to (hopefully) help Verizon users.
    Reworked network connection stack.
    Minor bug fixes.

This build is available at a NEW location and is version 1.22
http://www.flycast.fm/blackberry/candidate/flycast.jad

We will continue to monitor the forums so let us know if you
run into any issues. Thanks!

This build works much better than the previous 2 builds.

Streaming has been a bit hit and miss but on random selected stations I have had but it is a step in the positive direction.

On 1.FM - Top 40 (4 separate stream/tries by doing battery pull)
It will play for about 35-50 seconds then stop playing. 10-15 seconds later it will start streaming again and will play for about 90 seconds then stop for about another 10-15 seconds. Rinse and repeat.

On .977 Alternative (4 seperate stream/tries by doing battery pull)
It will play between 30-40 seconds then stop playing. Stops playing for 25-30 seconds you see it says "retrying" and then starts playing again. Buffer gets about 1/3 across the screen and is green and plays for about 2 minutes before it does the same thing. Rinse and repeat.

Refuses to load Accuradio stations 3 outta 4 times.
It did load up the station playlist but would not stream any music.

All I had time to test while working. Will mess with it more tonight and this weekend between the kids climbing on me and the honey-do list.

If there are any specific tasks or things you would like me to try or do. Or if you have a special debug/logging build you would want me to run please let me know. I am more than willing to help.

I think this will be a great app and you have a very robust channel list. I also like the interface and is very blackberry ball friendly.

Verizon 8330
F/W 4.5.0.97 (Platform 3.2.0.52)
Also for verizon I do not think there is an APN we use.

Great! I will give this a try and see what happens on my end....

....and no, Verizon users are not subject to an APN. I gather those numbers only apply to Non-US GSM carriers/networks.

Will let you know how it goes....

Well, first try with Accuradio went better than I expected: the song played initially for 40 secs before taking a 20 sec break. It came back on and played thru to the next song (about a good 5 minutes worth), and I'm still listening to that second song. Going on 6.5 minutes now total....

Funny, I have pretty much the same result. Accuradio 80s started, took a short break and has been playing several minutes now. My coverage area is fairly weak as well so there is a definite improvement with this version

A couple of things - make sure you delete your old version and re-boot your device before installing the new version. Cleanliness is next to godliness. Go to the equivalent of Options / Advanced Options / Applications /FlyCast and BBY button /Delete.

2nd - not all connections are created equal. I know this should go without saying, but I'm going to say it anyway. When your device shows a 3G, EV-DO, or EDGE symbol, it does not mean that you have a good connection to this particular network. You might be on the "EDGE" of the network. Think about WiFi. The further you get away from the router, the worse your connection is. But, if you only had a WiFI symbol, vs 5 bars that showed just 1 green, you might think that you have a good connection. Anyway, the point is, no streaming product, audio or video, will work all the time. The strength of the connection is the key.

So, if you are sure you have a great connection (for whatever reason - another streaming product works perfectly and FlyCast does not, you're standing next to a WiFi router and the PC shows 5 green bars, etc), then that is the time to report a connection problem (streams, stops, dies, etc). Cellular data connections are iffy right now period, but these will get better. WiFi is much more mature and predictable, but still, the "EDGE" is the edge.

The product "generally" works great on my Bold.

Hi, I have a BB 8830 from Alltel. I have installed v1.22 but when I click on the icon it states "We can't access your connection. Please verify your connection ". I have turned off my BB as well as taken out the batteries and replaced them. I still keep getting the same error message. Can you please help me resolve this issue? Thanks.

I've updated to 1.22 earlier this afternoon on my Blackberry Curve 8320 (T-Mobile).

Just fired it up a little while ago.

The first big improvement on my side of things is that I'm not seeing the hourglass that would appear every few seconds. I've learned to just put on headphones and put my player aside (or in my holster), and I was happy enough with it. But now with this new version, I can traverse between applications with greater ease. I can actually use other applications while the player continues streaming in the background. I'm very pleased in that regard.

It could be just me, but the quality seems to have a bit of an uptick; I noticed the stereo is coming in much better via Wi-Fi, or at least it sounds crisper than before.

That's my two cents; looking forward to more additional stations and podcast support.

Thanks very much for this!
