Software Update + Storm -- FlyCast v1.32 & v1.33 released

Postby FlyCastRosco on Thu Mar 19, 2009 5:28 pm

Hello everyone,

Sorry it has been a while since our last update. We have not
forgotten about our BlackBerry users. We have just been very
busy with updates and additions to our other platforms.

What's new:
UI changes for some devices (e.g Bold, Curve 8900, Storm).
Some minor bug fixes.
Some additional connection diagnostics (to assist with problems).
and ...

Audio Podcasts! Most of the audio podcasts available on our other
platforms will be available on BB now. A couple of notes. These
podcasts are streamed directly from the provider and do not go
through our servers. This means they *may* not always work. Also,
some of these podcasts are very high bitrate which is fine for side
loading but may make streaming them difficult or not possible.
Additionally, if you only have EDGE or a weak signal, you may have
a lot of trouble getting them to work. The end result is you will just
have to play around and see what you can get. We are looking into
ways to make more these more easily streamable to mobile.
and ...

Shoutcast support! You can now search for Shoutcast stations that
are not currently in our guide and play them directly. You can also make
them a favorite. A couple of notes. These stations are streamed directly
from the provider and do not go through our servers. This means they
*may* not always work. Also some of them may be 128Kbps or higher which
may make them difficult to stream if you aren't on 3G or WiFi. You may
have to play around and see which ones work for you.

** NOTE ** Please clear the browser cache on device BEFORE downloading.
Then simply point your BlackBerry browser to the download location.

How exactly do you utilize the Podcast feature? I see no options for that any where.

Sorry. That was a little confusing on my part.
Podcasts are available from the "Channels Guide".
These are assorted podcast feeds from many different
outlets. If you select one, we will try to stream it to
you just like we do for internet radio stations.

Any way to turn off the browser automatically opening when I select a favorite station?

There have been a fair number of complaints about the browser based
viewer for song information. We are going to make a new build this
week that reverts back to the old screen you saw when playing.
You have been heard. :)

I am using a BlackBerry 8900 and the font choices are terrible! The main screen font is too large and the labels on the buttons at the bottom of the screen are way too small. The history page (I believe is where I saw it) uses a large font with a smaller description underneath. This is great except that the small description is microscopic in size and barely readable. And I have great eyesight too!

Thanks!

Looked forward to this release, as it has shoutcast support. Unfortunately it doesn't work nearly as well as the last version.

My setup:
BB9000 on Rogers

Issues:
90% chance of getting asked for my APN on launch
After that, 90% chance of being asked to log in with my flycast userid
Once logged in, 50/50 chance of getting "CBC Radio 3" to show up in the shoutcast search -- sometimes it says "no result", trying again may get me the two R3 streams.
Starting a stream, 90% chance of it stalling at "buffering"
I finally (as we typed) managed to beat the odds and get the stream to play. I see that the buffer status line starts out fairly full and then shrinks down to a solitary red pixel.
The good news, the stream played for the entire time that it took me to write this note. ;)

Really looking forward to getting the bugs worked out. I'll use this app a lot.

I appreciate the hard work this team is doing to get this application happy and fully functional. I have a Blackberry Curve (8300) with an unlimited data package, and like the experience of so many on this forum my connection is lost after about five to ten minutes' streaming. My network connection is healthy as ever at the time.

I sympathise with the user who loses his opera just before the high notes. Mystery Theater kind of loses something when you never get to find out who the murderer is. It takes about 10 minutes to reconnect to Flycast after it's been traumatised by the lost connection to the server, and by then the programme is over. It needs some time to recover, is my guess. It's afraid to get back out there in the world and try to connect again. Who doesn't have a friend like that? They need patience. I'm willing to stick with the Flycast friendship, too, because when it does work it's awesome.

Go on, Flycast guys! Keep up the good work and best of luck fixing those connectivity issues.
